Just over a year after Netflix began allowing iOS users to subscribe to its service via in-app purchases, the Netflix app has summited the Top Grossing Apps chart for iPhone on the U.S. App Store. The app had flirted with the No. 1 spot previously on November 14, 2016, when it ended the day at No. 2, and returned to second place yesterday before topping the chart for the first time today.

The Netflix app's ascent to the top can be seen in the category ranking history below, from our App Intelligence platform. Following some stumbles in the early days of fall 2015, it's been a steady climb to the No. 1 position. In addition to being the top app in the U.S., it also occupies the No. 1 grossing spot on iPhone in India, Mexico, and Colombia as of this post.

Having recently added the ability for users to download selected TV shows and movies for offline playback in its app, Netflix has focused on growing its subscriber base through original television and film content, such as its incredibly popular Marvel Entertainment series Daredevil, Jessica Jones, and Luke Cage, which was just renewed for a second season. Netflix also intends to make a big push into unscripted programming with 20 such shows slated to debut in 2017.
