Mario Kart Races to 90 Million Downloads in First Week to Become Nintendo's Fastest-Ever Mobile Game Launch

Mario Kart Tour has raced to 90 million unique downloads in its first week to make it by far Nintendo's fastest mobile game launch in its history, according to Sensor Tower Store Intelligence estimates.

The number of downloads is six times greater than the company's second best launch, Animal Crossing: Pocket Camp, which generated 14.3 million downloads in its first week. The company's third best launch, Super Mario Run, picked up just under 13 million downloads in its debut week.

In terms of week one player spending, Mario Kart Tour has taken third place with $12.7 million, finishing behind Super Mario Run's $16.1 million and Fire Emblem Heroes' $28.2 million. It should be noted that Super Mario Run features a paywall to access the full game, while Fire Emblem Heroes is completely free-to-play.

Nintendo Mobile Games: Worldwide Player Spending Since Launch

Android has proven the most popular platform for Mario Kart Tour, picking 53.5 million downloads, or 59.5 percent. Nintendo's popular racer generated 36.5 million downloads on iOS.

For player spending, however, App Store players represented the majority of gross revenue spending $9.6 million, or 75.5 percent, compared to Google Play users' $3.1 million, or 24.5 percent.

At this very early stage, that gives Mario Kart Tour a revenue per download of $0.26 on iOS, compared to $0.06 on Android.

The United States took pole position for number of downloads, racing to 13.2 million, or 14.7 percent. It was followed by Brazil with 10.7 million, or 11.8 percent, and Mexico with 5.8 million, or 6.4 percent.

The United States led the pack for revenue too, with users in the country spending nearly $5.8 million or 45.4 percent of the total. Japan finished the week just behind with $4 million in player spend, or 31.3 percent, while France came third with $752k, or 6.4 percent.

Mario Kart Tour isn't the only racing game to tear it up on mobile this year. In China, Tencent's Crazy Racing KartRider picked up nearly 2.8 million downloads during its first week on the App Store in July, with players spending $17.8 million. To date, that game has gone on to generate more than $156 million since launch.
