All Signals Point Up for App’s Downloads and MAUs
The recent news surrounding the current administration’s use of the Signal platform, also dubbed “SignalGate”, has generated significant interest in the app, as US downloads increased 25% DoD and 47% DoD on 3/24 and 3/25, respectively, aligning with growing mentions of the app in the media. Signal’s positive growth in users and downloads in 2025 contrasts with the app’s larger competitors, including Telegram and Viber.
Key Takeaways:
US DAUs for Signal increased 3% DoD on the inauguration (1/20), up 6% DoD the following day (1/21) while US downloads increased 11% and 17% DoD, respectively
The US is the largest market for Signal by total global downloads, accounting for 27% of downloads, followed by the Netherlands and Germany with 18% and 6% of global downloads, respectively
Signal has amassed 218mn global downloads since it launched in 2014, though Telegram is the largest app across the private messenger cohort with 2.5bn app downloads
As MAUs and downloads fell an average of -1% and -6% YoY across the cohort, respectively, this could suggest that Signal’s strong mobile performance in 2025 is an outlier amongst its competitors
