Category Divergence: AI Assistants Are Increasingly Concentrated, While High-Value Vertical AI Segments Offer Significant Growth Opportunities

The AI Assistant category is becoming increasingly concentrated, with ChatGPT maintaining a dominant leadership position and significantly outpacing competitors in revenue. Leading platforms have established strong competitive moats through technological leadership, user scale, brand strength, and ecosystem advantages.

In contrast, high-value vertical segments such as AI Companions, AI Agents and AI Image & Video Generation remain in a rapid growth phase. These categories are characterised by a fragmented competitive landscape, with revenue distributed across a large number of emerging players. As market leadership has yet to be firmly established, substantial opportunities remain for new entrants to capture growth and build differentiated positions.

AI Companion apps have evolved from a niche use case into a mature mobile app category. In 2026 Q1, revenue reached $150 million, with the market expanding more than 12x compared to 2023 Q1. Revenue growth continues to significantly outpace user growth, indicating that rising demand for AI companionship is increasingly translating into paid behavior and stronger monetisation.

ChatGPT Maintains a Dominant Lead as Gemini and Claude Gain Momentum

ChatGPT generated nearly $1.3 billion in mobile revenue in a single quarter, exceeding the combined revenue of all other Top 10 AI apps by more than 5x. In March 2026, ChatGPT's mobile active user base approached 1 billion, although its 0.5% QoQ growth suggests the platform is entering a more mature stage of adoption. At the same time, Grok, Claude and Google Gemini have delivered explosive revenue growth on mobile, intensifying competition within the AI Assistant category and increasingly challenging ChatGPT's dominance.

As Gemini and Claude continue to gain traction, ChatGPT's share of web traffic has gradually declined. Among leading global AI platforms, ChatGPT's share of website visits fell from 66% in July 2025 to 50% in March 2026, while Gemini and Claude increased their shares to 22% and 10%, respectively. This trend highlights a more competitive AI landscape as users increasingly diversify across multiple AI platforms.
