State of Digital Advertising 2026 - Blog

The digital advertising landscape experienced shifts over the past year, driven by rapid innovation in generative AI, evolving consumer media habits, and the expansion of streaming surfaces. US digital ad spend reached $201 billion between August 2025 and July 2026, a 15% YoY increase, generating over 19 trillion ad impressions (+7% YoY).

Social channels continue to command the largest share of digital media budgets. Facebook remains the #1 ad channel overall in the US, generating $42.9 billion in ad spend over the 12-month period. Shopping retained its position as the #1 ad category (accounting for nearly a quarter of all digital spend), followed by Consumer Packaged Goods (CPG) and Health & Wellness. At the brand level, Procter & Gamble claimed the top spot as the #1 advertiser, taking the lead ahead of Amazon.com (#2) and The Walt Disney Company (#3).

AI Reshapes Advertising from Creative Testing to Conversational Search

Artificial intelligence has rapidly moved from an experimental tool to an operational core in ad creative production. As generative image, video, and text tools improve, brands are leveraging shorter production cycles to scale creative testing and iterate faster.

This trend is evident in the growing median number of unique ad creatives deployed by top US advertisers. Gaming led all major verticals with a 54% YoY surge in unique ad creatives between August 2025 and July 2026, followed by Food & Dining Services (+26% YoY), Financial Services (+21% YoY), and Media & Entertainment (+19% YoY). While Shopping maintained the highest total creative volume (+7% YoY), the rapid acceleration in iteration-heavy categories highlights how AI is helping marketers reduce production friction and test more efficiently.

As consumer attention migrates toward AI assistants like ChatGPT, AI search is emerging as a critical, high-intent discovery channel for advertisers. ChatGPT significantly expanded its advertising footprint by displaying ads across a higher percentage of prompts starting in June 2026. While e-commerce originally led early ad volume, ChatGPT's impression mix rapidly diversified beyond Shopping between April and August 2026.

Shopping's share of ad impressions fell nearly 16 percentage points, from 36.5% in April to 20.9% in August, as intent-driven service verticals expanded their presence. Financial Services surged nearly eightfold to capture 12.6% of total impressions, while Travel & Tourism grew to 10.3% (+5.7 ppts vs. April). Health & Wellness also expanded from 0.7% to 5.1%. This shift underscores how advertisers outside retail are increasingly leveraging conversational AI environments to reach active, high-intent consumers.

Linear TV Share Declines as OTT Gains Momentum

Within the video advertising landscape (encompassing Linear TV, OTT, and YouTube), ad spend and impressions continue to migrate rapidly toward connected TV surfaces. In the first seven months of 2026, total US OTT ad spend reached $12 billion, a 17% YoY increase that significantly outperformed YouTube (+6% YoY) while traditional Linear TV contracted (-3% YoY).

This reallocation directly reflects steep impression share losses for Linear TV across key industry verticals between Q1 2024 and Q2 2026, most notably in Telecom (-16 ppts to 44%), Travel & Tourism (-12 ppts to 35%), Financial Services (-10 ppts to 36%), and Food & Dining (-10 ppts to 48%).

Streaming captured the vast majority of this capital shift, highlighted by Telecom more than doubling its OTT impression share to 26% (+14 ppts). Concurrently, Auto, Health & Wellness, and Food & Dining each recorded approximately 8 percentage point gains in OTT impression share, solidifying connected TV as an essential channel for high-intent audience reach.
