In the first quarter of 2021, the sandbox gaming category has seen significant activity on the Android platform in the United States. Sensor Tower's data offers us a detailed look at the top-performing games in terms of downloads, revenue, and active users.
Roblox started the year strong with a slight decline in downloads from 220K in the last week of December to 130K by the end of March. The weekly active users, however, showed a steady increase from 8.7M to 10.4M, indicating a growing and engaged user base. Revenue trends saw a dip from $4.9M in the last week of December to around $2.6M by the end of March, yet maintaining a substantial income.
Minecraft showed a fluctuating download pattern starting at 45K and peaking at 124K in February before dropping to 19K by March end. Weekly active users saw a progressive increase from 2M to 3.2M, reflecting high retention and engagement. Revenue experienced a slight decline from $534K to $322K throughout the quarter.
LokiCraft, with no revenue reported, had a notable number of downloads beginning at 72K and ending the quarter at 56K. The weekly active users showed an initial increase, peaking at 437K in February, and then a decrease to 377K by the end of March.
Block Craft 3D: Building Game observed downloads starting at 85K in December, peaking at 88K in February, and then marginally decreasing to 52K by March. The game's weekly active users declined from 595K to 480K. Revenue trends were relatively stable, beginning at $5.4K and peaking at $7.6K by the quarter's end.
Craftsman: Building Craft experienced a varied download trend, starting at 54K, reaching 78K in March, and then settling at 45K. The weekly active users increased significantly from 88K to 129K in early March before dropping to 90K.
