In the first quarter of 2021, Europe's social networking scene saw significant activity across key applications. Sensor Tower provides a detailed look into how these apps performed in terms of downloads, revenue, and weekly active users.
WhatsApp Messenger maintained a strong user base with weekly active users hovering around the 380M mark, peaking at 388M in late March. Downloads for the app started at 2.4M in the last week of December and saw a dip to around 1.7M by the end of March. Revenue showed a slight fluctuation, with the highest at $821K in late February.
Telegram Messenger, despite not generating revenue, witnessed a surge in downloads early in the quarter, reaching a peak of 3.7M in mid-January. Weekly active users climbed steadily, starting from 101M to over 121M by the end of March.
Facebook showed a consistent performance with its weekly active users staying above 315M throughout the quarter. Downloads saw a high of 1.4M in early January, while revenue peaked at $460K in early March.
Messenger experienced a similar trend with active users remaining stable at just over 215M. Downloads fluctuated, with a high of 1.3M in mid-February. The app's revenue, while modest, peaked at $13K in late January.
Signal - Private Messenger saw an explosive start to the quarter with downloads jumping from 111K to 3.7M in the second week of January, indicating a significant interest spike. Active users mirrored this trend, soaring to over 15M in the same period. However, by the end of March, both downloads and active users had gradually decreased to 278K and nearly 13.8M, respectively.
