The third excerpt from our State of Shopping Apps Report for 2019 focuses on the top Marketplace apps in the United States by downloads and market share between Q1 2016 and Q3 2019. App download estimates in this report are from Sensor Tower’s Store Intelligence platform.
Amazon was the most downloaded Marketplace app in the U.S. for Q1 to Q3 2019. It rose one position from 2018, followed by Wish, letgo, OfferUp, and eBay.
Wish was the top app in the U.S. for seven consecutive quarters between Q1 2017 and Q3 2018, but Amazon regained the top spot in Q4 2018. Amazon remained ahead of Wish for the next four quarters, although Wish narrowed the gap in Q3 2019. Installs for other top Marketplace apps such as OfferUp and letgo declined in the U.S. in recent years. This was in line with the overall decline in downloads for general Marketplace apps in the U.S.
Amazon’s U.S. downloads increased gradually over the past few years while installs for other top Marketplace apps decreased. As a result, Amazon’s market share increased from 17 percent in 2016 to 22 percent in the first three quarters of 2019. The top five apps accounted for nearly 75 percent of Marketplace downloads in the U.S. between Q1 and Q3 2019 (among the top 100 Shopping apps). The next 11 apps accounted for the remaining 26 percent.
