The mobile version of Genshin Impact from miHoYo generated approximately $874 million during the first five months following its official launch on September 28, 2020, maintaining a strong start to its multi-platform strategy, Sensor Tower Store Intelligence estimates show.

The title has been a huge global hit, ranking as the No. 3 revenue generating mobile game globally across the App Store and Google Play in the period following its launch. It sits behind Honor of Kings and PUBG Mobile from Tencent, which have both grossed more than $1 billion during the past five months, and above blockbusters Pokémon GO from Niantic and Roblox from Roblox Corporation. That makes Genshin Impact the top earning mobile RPG worldwide, and so far it has brought in an average of approximately $175 million in player spending per month. The game is also available on other platforms including PC and PlayStation 4.

Top Grossing Mobile Games Worldwide Between September 28, 2020 and February 28, 2021

China continues to rank as the No. 1 revenue generating country for the title, with Genshin Impact picking up approximately $253 million from the local App Store to date, accounting for 29 percent of global player spending. Outside of China, the game has picked up just over $620 million, accounting for 71 percent of all revenue. Japan ranks No. 2 for player spending globally, accumulating $237 million, or approximately 27 percent of all revenue, while the United States ranks No. 3, with about $162 million, or 18.5 percent of the total.

The App Store accounts for the majority of global player spending to date, contributing approximately $521 million, or close to 60 percent of total revenue. Google Play, meanwhile, accounts for $352 million, or about 40 percent.

Staying Strong

While October 2020 remains Genshin Impact’s best month for revenue, when it generated close to $234 million, it has continued at a steady $150 million-plus over the past three months, making it consistently one of the world’s top grossing mobile titles. Other publishers will be taking note, and it’s likely we’ll start to see other titles developed in a similar vein to Genshin Impact, potentially ushering in a new era of technologically advanced, cross-platform mobile gaming.
