Blowing its Predecessor Out of the Water

The second title in the series has completely surpassed the original Slay the Spire in every way possible, and it is not by a small margin. According to Sensor Tower’s Video Game Insights, Slay the Spire II accrued 2.5 times more revenue and has surpassed the number of copies sold by the original by 3 million on Steam. In addition, the sequel’s launch in March was promoted with the option (which is permanently available) to purchase both games as a discounted bundle which also led to the increase of units sold and active players for the first game in the same month - a strategic marketing maneuver by Mega Crit as newcomers would be introduced to the franchise and be able to purchase the full series at once while older fans could get a discount on the new release. While there was a risk for Mega Crit to lose out on max profits with this deal, the bundle proved to be a win as over 4 million purchases were made in the first week of launch.

Considering the rising popularity of multiplayer indie games such as PEAK and R.E.P.O., the most notable feature of Slay the Spire II is its newly added co-op mode. Allowing up to 4 people to play together, the new mode adds further charm to the game, as there are game mechanics added to the run that aren’t available in the singleplayer mode. From extra playable cards to deciding who gets what relic, strategies must be carefully discussed in order to maximize teamwork in each turn and defeat the buffed bosses. While reviews are mixed on the difficulty for the shared playthroughs, the general consensus is that the co-op system is a great addition that feels like a shared online board game.

A Mega Hit For Mega Crit

Despite having been developed by a small indie company and still in “early access” status, Mega Crit’s Slay the Spire II has shown that it can stand alongside other huge titles - and it continues to draw in new players with its addicting game mechanics. With its huge success that has been holding strong since its debut and its current hold as the Top 1 Seller for 2026, the deckbuilder game has proven itself to be a monster competitor on the market.
