During the same period, Japan ranked ninth by downloads, generating 585 million downloads, down 5.4% year over year. This gap between its revenue and download rankings reflects Japan’s mature market profile: growth depends less on large volumes of new installs and more on established players, strong engagement, and high spending across leading titles.

Note: The download data in this report are based on estimated downloads from the App Store and Google Play, excluding pre-installs, re-downloads, and downloads from third-party Android marketplaces. Google Play is not available in Mainland China.

IAP revenue remained at JPY 1.56 trillion in the past 12 months , showing greater resilience than downloads. Although spending moderated in 2026, Japan continues to benefit from a mature, high-value player base, with iOS accounting for the majority of consumer spending. Total hours peaked in 2022 before gradually easing, but players still spent around 16.7 billion hours in mobile games during the latest 12-month period. Engagement has remained comparatively stable since 2024, supporting live operations and sustained market monetization.

Japan’s Digital Advertising Market Reaches New Highs as Gaming Ranks Among the Top Three Categories

Japan’s digital advertising market expanded steadily from Q1 2025 through Q2 2026, with both spending and impressions reaching their highest levels at the end of the period. Despite a modest pause in early 2026, the subsequent rebound indicates continued advertiser confidence and growing competition for digital audiences.

Gaming ranked third among Japan’s leading categories by both digital ad spend and impressions in H1 2025, behind only Media & Entertainment and Shopping. Its strong position reflects sustained investment by game publishers seeking to capture player attention across mobile, PC, and console in one of the world’s most competitive gaming markets.

Looking Ahead: The Future of Japan Gaming
