The holiday season has finally arrived and United States shopping app downloads have continued to remain steady despite economic challenges. Our latest report, The State of Shopping Apps, breaks down five subcategories including Clothes and Fashion, General Marketplace, Coupon and Reward, Superstore, and Payment.
Q4 marks a significant time for Shopping apps during the holiday season. The top 100 Shopping apps in the U.S. have maintained 100 million downloads since Q4 2019. And while download growth in Q3 2022 only rose by 3 percent from Q2 2022, the quarter achieved the most downloads out of all third quarters since 2019.
Shopping apps in the U.S. collectively saw more than 9 million downloads in 2022 during the Black Friday weekend. Compared to 2019, app adoption during Black Friday 2022 increased by 9 percent, reaching a new record. For example, sneaker apps like GOAT promoted Black Friday exclusive deals including a free pair of sneakers via raffles on social media platforms. By releasing products on exclusive platforms or running seasonal promotions, other Shopping apps can learn to leverage their market position to stay relevant.
Grocery apps have become a necessity throughout 2020 and 2022 due to current events. Brands such as Kroger and Safeway saw their apps’ downloads grow in July 2022. In addition to promoting curbside pickup and contactless alternatives, the brands leveraged their personalized rewards programs following the trajectory of rising inflation.
As consumers continue to face economic challenges, Shopping apps have responded by showcasing solutions for rewards, savings, and deals to stay top of mind.
