Sensor Tower’s Q3 2019 Data Digest was released last week, and beginning today we will be sharing a series of selected excerpts from the report, starting with the most downloaded apps worldwide for the quarter. WhatsApp was again the most downloaded app in Q3 2019 with close to 184 million first-time installs. WhatsApp has been the No. 1 downloaded app each quarter since Q3 2016, when Pokémon GO took the top spot. The full ranking of the top 20 most downloaded apps for the quarter is below. The download estimates presented in this chart are from Sensor Tower’s Store Intelligence platform.
The second most downloaded app worldwide in 3Q19 was TikTok with more than 176 million new installs. The third highest performing app was Messenger, followed by Facebook and Instagram.
Following two quarters of declining downloads, TikTok bounced back in 3Q19 with 13 percent growth quarter-over-quarter. In doing so, it moved past Messenger and Facebook to reach the No. 2 position.
TikTok was the most downloaded app globally on Apple’s App Store 3Q19 with close to 37 million installs, followed by YouTube, Instagram, WhatsApp, and Google Maps.
After five quarters in the top spot, TikTok was surpassed by YouTube on the App Store in Q2 2019. TikTok regained the No. 1 position in Q3. Netflix experienced 23 percent quarter-over-quarter growth to re-enter the top 10 last quarter. This was its second best quarter on the App Store just behind Q1 2019.
WhatsApp was the most downloaded app on Google Play worldwide for 3Q19 with more than 156 million installs, followed by Messenger, TikTok, Facebook, and Likee.
Four apps had more than 120 million downloads on Google Play in Q3, including WhatsApp, Messenger, TikTok, and Facebook. Likee was No. 5 with 80 million installs. Club Factory, a popular shopping app in India, reached the top 20 apps on Google Play for the first time. Its Club Diwali Sale helped it reach No. 1 on the Top Free chart in India.
