Throughout this week, we’ll be sharing insights from our State of Shopping Apps report, the full version of which is available to Sensor Tower enterprise customers. We begin with a look at the top 10 shopping apps worldwide by downloads for the years of 2015 through 2018.

Top Shopping Apps Worldwide from 2015-2018 by Downloads

Three of the top shopping apps, Wish, Amazon, and AliExpress, consistently ranked in the top five from 2015 to 2018, with Wish moving to the top of the charts in 2017 and continuing to clench that spot in 2018. Shopee ranked in the top five beginning in 2017, and Joom entered in 2018. Read on for the full top 10 ranking of mobile shopping apps worldwide by downloads from 2015 through 2018. App download estimates are from Sensor Tower’s Store Intelligence platform.

Worldwide Shopping App Download Trends from 2015-2018

Worldwide shopping app downloads climbed past one billion in 4Q18. This represented new single-quarter records for both the App Store and Google Play and reflected 15 percent year-over-year growth from 4Q17. Google Play downloads grew by nearly 100 million year-over-year, compared to an increase of 42 million on the App Store. Since its launch, the App Store’s Shopping category has accounted for approximately 40 percent of worldwide shopping app downloads, with the other 60 percent coming from Google Play.

Store Intelligence users can see app download estimates for the above apps in addition to historical performance metrics on the Sensor Tower platform. Our estimates include downloads for the App Store and Google Play worldwide between Jan. 1, 2015 and Dec. 31, 2018. Apple apps and Google pre-installed apps are excluded. We report unique installs only. Android estimates do not include third-party stores. Figures represent aggregate installs of all app versions, ex: Facebook and Facebook Lite.
