The four largest U.S.-based social networks—Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and Snapchat—saw global installs of more than 376 million during the first quarter of 2019 across the App Store and Google Play, growing a combined 3.1 percent year-over-year according to Sensor Tower Store Intelligence estimates. Twitter led its rivals in terms of new user growth, adding 16 percent more first-time downloads compared to the year-ago quarter.
Twitter added 4.9 million more users last quarter than it did during 1Q18, reaching a total of 35.5 million globally, up from 30.6 million. Regions throughout Southeast Asia saw some of the largest gains for the app, with Indonesia experiencing 101 percent growth, Vietnam increasing by 52 percent, and the Philippines rising 50 percent compared the first quarter of 2018.
Facebook and Instagram grew first-time installs by 5.2 and .04 percent Y/Y during the quarter, reaching 176.2 million and 111.3 million new users, respectively. Snapchat was the only app in this analysis to see a Y/Y decline in new users added, slipping 4.1 percent from 1Q18 when it reached 55.8 first-time installs. Last quarter it added 53.5 million, according to our estimates.
