The Q2 2026 data reveals a mobile market undergoing a structural shift toward monetization depth over raw download volume. Global in-app purchase (IAP) revenue reached $43.6 billion (+5.3% year-over-year) despite flat downloads, driven by a record $24.4 billion in non-gaming revenue (+14.6% YoY) that cushioned a 4.5% decline in gaming. Google Play outpaced iOS in revenue momentum (+10% vs. +3% YoY).

Meanwhile, global growth pivoted away from the US (-3% YoY), counterbalanced by strong expansion in Mainland China (+$519M on iOS) and key European markets (UK, Germany, France), which collectively added $500 million across iOS and Google Play.

Puzzle Games Defy Gaming Downturn, Driven by Arrow Puzzle Breakouts

While total mobile gaming revenue contracted, Puzzle games stood out as a primary bright spot in Q2 2026. The genre surged 17% YoY to surpass $4 billion in IAP revenue, closing in on Strategy ($4.4 billion) as the top-grossing gaming vertical. Furthermore, Puzzle was the only major mobile game genre to achieve positive YoY download growth (+1% YoY), defying widespread double-digit drops across categories like Simulation and Arcade.

This momentum was heavily driven by breakout arrow puzzle titles, which swept the top three global download breakout spots. Lead title Arrows Puzzle Escape surged to become the No. 1 downloaded mobile game worldwide, topping charts across key markets including the UK, Canada, Saudi Arabia, and the UAE. Together with Arrows GO! (No. 5 overall), these two titles added over 110 million QoQ installs, reshaping global user acquisition rankings.

Generative AI: Mobile Monetization Soars as Platform Workflows Diverge

Generative AI doubled global consumer mobile spend (+108% YoY) in Q2 2026. Growth was led by ChatGPT, which reached $1.4 billion in quarterly revenue (+82% YoY) while surpassing the 2 billion cumulative download milestone. Simultaneously, Anthropic’s Claude rapidly accelerated its mobile monetization, surging 4X QoQ in revenue to enter the global top 10 grossing non-gaming apps.

On the web, user engagement revealed a clear structural split between mobile convenience and desktop browser workflows. ChatGPT’s web traffic dipped 7% QoQ as its user base migrated its native mobile app, pushing its app-only share to 46% (+13 pp YoY). Conversely, competing platforms anchored heavy power users in browser environments: Claude delivered a landmark performance as the #1 global breakout website (+4.8B visits QoQ), entering the top 20 websites worldwide for the first time, while Google Gemini secured the #3 breakout spot (+3.0B visits QoQ).

Digital Advertising Market: Shopping Spend Rebounds Following Tariff Uncertainty

Digital advertising spend in the US reached $49 billion in Q2 2026 (+15% YoY), driven by a strong rebound in the Shopping category. After four quarters of modest expansion amid tariff-driven headwinds, Shopping ad spend accelerated to +13% YoY growth. Retail brands ramped up investment to capitalize on major events like the 2026 FIFA World Cup, with Official Supporter The Home Depot surging 66% QoQ and Dick’s Sporting Goods jumping 93% QoQ.

Shopping advertisers also expanded their reach on ChatGPT, accounting for nearly one-third (31%) of all platform ad impressions in Q2 2026. Driven particularly by household and hardware categories, major retail brands, led again by The Home Depot, alongside Harbor Freight Tools and Scheels, actively deployed conversational ad units to intercept consumers during active product research and recommendation prompts.
