While Honor of Kings has long been one of the world’s top revenue generating mobile games, the COVID-19 pandemic and lockdowns has propelled player spending to new heights. In 2020, player spending was up more than 50 percent year-over-year to $2.6 billion. Monthly revenue continues to increase and April 2021 marked its best month ever on the App Store and Google Play. From January to April, Honor of Kings had already generated close to $1 billion.
Analyzing how the mobile games market at large is performing since the initial wave of global lockdowns that took place in Q1 and Q2 2020, we can see that player spending was up 10.8 percent year-over-year in April 2021, with the App Store and Google Play generating $7.2 billion combined worldwide. While many parts of the world continue to enforce various social restrictions, the mobile games sector continues to grow as some lockdowns are eased, suggesting, so far at least, that the sector can maintain last year’s outsized performance.
