The top grossing mobile game worldwide for December 2020 was Honor of Kings from Tencent with $258 million in player spending, which represented a 58 percent growth from December 2019. Approximately 96 percent of Honor of Kings’ revenue was from China, followed by 1.4 percent from Taiwan and 1.2 percent from Thailand. PUBG Mobile from Tencent was the second highest earning mobile game worldwide for December 2020 with more than $177 million in gross revenue, which represented 7.5 percent year-over-year growth from December 2019. About 56 percent of PUBG Mobile’s revenue was from China and its localized version of the title, Game For Peace, followed by 9.6 percent from the United States. The next top grossing game was Genshin Impact from miHoYo, followed by Pokémon GO from Niantic and Roblox from Roblox Corporation.
Genshin Impact continues to find huge success globally, generating an estimated $163.5 million in December alone, bringing the title’s lifetime revenue by the end of the month to nearly $560 million. December was also notable for being the first month in which China was usurped as the game’s most lucrative country by Japan, which contributed $49.6 million from player spending, or 30.3 percent of total revenue.
Ahead of its IPO, Roblox reported its best month ever in December, picking up $138.7 million in player spending on mobile, an increase of more than 75 percent from December 2019. The title’s biggest day for revenue came on Christmas, when it generated more than $13 million in a single day. Pokémon GO, meanwhile, capped off its best year ever for player spending with its second best month of 2020, accumulating $159.3 million.
