The top grossing mobile game worldwide for January 2021 was Honor of Kings from Tencent with $267.3 million in player spending, which represented close to 22 percent growth from January 2020. Approximately 97 percent of Honor of Kings’ revenue was from China, followed by 1 percent from Thailand. The full ranking of the top grossing mobile games for January 2021 is above. PUBG Mobile from Tencent was the second highest earning mobile game worldwide for January 2021 with more than $259 million in gross revenue, which represented 26 percent year-over-year growth from January 2020. Approximately 60 percent of PUBG Mobile’s revenue was from China and its localized version of the title, Game For Peace, followed by 9.8 percent from the United States. The next top grossing game was Fate/Grand Order from Sony’s Aniplex, followed by Genshin Impact from miHoYo and Roblox from Roblox Corporation.
Genshin Impact continues to be hugely successful worldwide. In January, the title generated $153.4 million, with Japan extending its lead as the game’s top market, accounting for approximately 33 percent of player spending. It was followed by China with 25.7 percent of all revenue, and the U.S. with 17.4 percent. While Genshin Impact is an international success, 74.2 percent of all revenue still hails from Asia.
Professional Baseball Spirits A from Konami was a new entrant to the overall top 10 grossing mobile games in January. The title had its best month ever, racking up $112.5 million, a more than three times increase from January 2020. By January 31, 2021, lifetime revenue had reached $1.3 billion, with Japan accounting for all player spending. It’s evidence of just how lucrative the Japanese mobile games market remains, and how much success publisher Konami has found in the space.
