The top grossing mobile game worldwide for September 2020 was Honor of Kings from Tencent with close to $240 million in user spending, not including third-party Android stores. PUBG Mobile from Tencent was the second highest earning mobile game worldwide for September 2020 with more than $198 million in gross revenue, which represented 13.3 percent year-over-year growth from September 2019. About 56.5 percent of PUBG Mobile’s revenue was from China and its localized version of the title, Game For Peace, followed by 12.4 percent from the United States. The next top grossing game was Coin Master from Moon Active, followed by Monster Strike from Mixi and Pokémon GO from Niantic.

Rise of Kingdoms from Lilith Games had its best month ever in September, generating nearly $84 million, up 52.6 percent Y/Y. The surge in player spending followed its launch in China during the month, where its iOS version accumulated $15.7 million, or 18.8 percent of the game’s global revenue for September. The title’s success in China is another sign of the lucrative opportunities in the country, while its worldwide revenue is also an example of how Chinese publishers are increasingly looking global, as proven with the launch of Genshin Impact from miHoYo at the end of September, with that title generating approximately $60 million in its first week.

Coin Master was another title to have its best month ever, picking up close to $113 million in player spending, up 121 percent Y/Y. Revenue for the title has been surging since the start of 2019, surpassing $500 million by October last year. 2020 has seen its star continue to rise further, perhaps accelerated by the global COVID-19 pandemic and lockdowns.
