The first quarter of 2021 has been an interesting period for social networking apps in Brazil. According to data provided by Sensor Tower, we observed notable trends in downloads and active users for the top social networking applications on the unified platform, which includes both iOS and Android data.
WhatsApp Messenger showed a strong start in January with downloads peaking at approximately 754K, before experiencing a gradual decline to around 549K by the end of March. The app's weekly active users hovered around the 97M mark throughout the quarter, with slight fluctuations but generally maintaining a stable user base.
Telegram Messenger witnessed a significant spike in downloads, reaching a high of over 1.6M in the week of January 18th. The trend for downloads then followed a downward trajectory, finishing the quarter at around 442K. Weekly active users saw a peak of nearly 20M in mid-January, before gradually settling to just over 19M by the quarter's end.
Facebook maintained a consistent download rate, starting the quarter with 600K and ending with approximately 615K. Revenue showed some variability, with a peak at around $41K in mid-March. Active users experienced growth, rising from 140M at the beginning of the quarter to a peak of 144M in mid-March, before slightly decreasing to around 142M.
Messenger, also part of Meta Platforms, Inc., saw downloads ranging from 440K to around 533K in late March. Revenue for the app showed an upward trend, starting at $22 and reaching $48 in early March. Weekly active users showed a slight decline over the quarter, from approximately 59M to just over 55M.
Lastly, Signal - Private Messenger experienced a massive surge in downloads in early January, with over 1.3M downloads in the week of January 11th, following which the numbers declined steadily to 25K by the end of March. The weekly active user count for Signal rose sharply to 463K in mid-January but decreased to around 167K by the end of the quarter.
