Europe's navigation and maps app landscape saw considerable activity in the second quarter of 2021. As reported by Sensor Tower, the top five apps in this category exhibited unique download and user engagement trends.
Google Maps Go maintained a strong presence with downloads starting at 600 thousand in the last week of March and peaking at over 800 thousand by late June. The app's weekly active users mirrored this trend, initially at 66 million and rising to over 77 million by the end of the quarter.
Waze Navigation & Live Traffic, despite showing no revenue, enjoyed a steady increase in downloads, from around 300 thousand to nearly 370 thousand by the quarter's end. Weekly active users also saw a gradual rise from 15 million to over 18 million.
Google Earth experienced fluctuations in downloads, starting at 200 thousand and ending the quarter with a slight increase. The app's active users remained relatively stable, with a minor decrease from 2 million to just under that by the end of June.
For GPS, Maps, Voice Navigation, revenue was modest, hovering around 2 thousand USD throughout the quarter. Downloads began at around 100 thousand and saw a peak of over 100 thousand in mid-June. Active users started at 300 thousand and increased to over 300 thousand by the quarter's close.
Lastly, what3words: Navigation & Maps showed a revenue starting at just 22 USD and reaching 38 USD by the end of June. Downloads had an initial spike at over 100 thousand in early April, followed by a dip and a rebound to over 100 thousand by the quarter's end. Active users followed a similar pattern, starting at 300 thousand, dipping mid-quarter, and then rising to nearly 400 thousand.
