In the second quarter of 2023, the top navigation and maps applications on the Android platform in South Africa showed varied performance in terms of downloads, revenue, and active users. Here’s a closer look at the key metrics for each app, with data provided by Sensor Tower.
Waze Navigation & Live Traffic had a consistent presence throughout the quarter. Weekly downloads peaked at 12.5K in late April and remained relatively stable, ending the quarter at around 11.2K. Active users showed a steady increase, starting at 101K in late March and reaching 109K by the end of June.
GPS, Maps, Voice Navigation from AppStar Studios saw an upward trend in weekly revenue, peaking at $42 in late May. Downloads fluctuated, with a low of 4.2K in mid-April and a high of 5.6K at the end of June. Active users mirrored this trend, starting at 15.1K in late March and ending at 17.7K by the end of June.
Live Satellite View GPS Map experienced a notable increase in downloads, starting at 3.5K in late March and peaking at 7.3K in mid-May. Active users followed a similar pattern, beginning at 3.4K and reaching 7.3K by mid-May before stabilizing around 5.5K towards the end of the quarter.
Google Maps continued to be a staple for users, with a significant spike in downloads at the start of June, reaching 15.8K. Active users saw a slight decline initially but recovered to end the quarter at around 33.9K.
Finally, Offline Maps, GPS Directions from AppStar Studios showed a declining trend in downloads, starting at 2.7K in late March and dropping to 1.7K by the end of June. Active users also saw a decrease, from 10K in late March to around 10.3K by the end of the quarter.
