In the fourth quarter of 2023, the carpooling and ridesharing app landscape in the United States saw varied performance across major players. Data from Sensor Tower provides a glimpse into the downloads and active users trends for these apps.
Uber - Request a ride experienced a fluctuating trend in downloads, starting at around 402K in the last week of September and peaking at 410K in the week of October 23. However, by the end of December, downloads dipped to approximately 356K. The app's weekly active users saw an initial rise from roughly 13.9M to 15.1M in late October, before a declining trend took hold, ending the quarter at about 11.8M.
Lyft also exhibited fluctuations in downloads, with an early quarter peak at 295K in October and a closing figure of 255K in the festive week of December. Weekly active users for Lyft peaked at 6.7M in late October, followed by a gradual decrease to 5.3M by the year's end.
For Uber - Driver: Drive & Deliver, downloads varied between 155K and 134K throughout the quarter. The app's active user base reached its zenith in early December with 2.9M users, only to see a slight drop to approximately 2.5M by December 25.
Lyft Driver maintained more stable download numbers, hovering around the mid-40Ks for most of the quarter, and weekly active users consistently stayed close to 590K, with a slight uptick to 597K by the end of December.
Lastly, Bolt: Request a Ride, while smaller in scale compared to its competitors, showed a positive trend in downloads, rising from 37K in late September to over 45K by Christmas week. Active users mirrored this trend, increasing from approximately 52K to 58K in the same period.
