In the third quarter of 2024, the top five news applications in New Zealand demonstrated diverse trends in terms of downloads, revenue, and active users, according to data from Sensor Tower.
NZ Herald News showed a fluctuating revenue pattern, peaking at around $22K in late September. Downloads hovered around 600 weekly, with a slight dip in early September. The app maintained a stable active user base, with numbers generally around 5K, showing a minor increase towards the end of the quarter.
The Guardian - Live World News experienced a significant revenue spike, reaching nearly $8.8K in late July before stabilizing around $5K to $7K towards the quarter's end. Weekly downloads remained relatively low, fluctuating slightly around 150-200. Active users saw a gradual decline from about 7.7K to just under 7K.
X displayed consistent revenue, with minor variances, peaking at around $4.7K in mid-August. Downloads initially rose to over 3.6K in mid-July but gradually decreased to about 2.8K by the end of September. Despite this, the app maintained a robust active user base, consistently above 390K throughout the quarter.
The New York Times: Live News saw varied revenue trends, with a peak of nearly $2K in late September. Downloads fluctuated around 220-280 weekly, while active users remained stable, averaging around 4.8K, with a slight decrease towards the quarter's end.
The Economist - News, Podcasts experienced a decrease in revenue mid-quarter, dropping to $476 in mid-August, before recovering to approximately $1.5K by late September. Downloads were consistently low, ranging from 85 to 160 weekly. Active user numbers showed minor fluctuations, maintaining just under 1K throughout the quarter.
