As the year 2020 came to a close, many Americans turned their attention to tax preparation and planning. Utilizing data from Sensor Tower, we can now look at how the top tax-related applications performed in the United States during the fourth quarter.
IRS2Go, published by the Internal Revenue Service, showed a remarkable increase in downloads, with figures soaring from 30K in late September to an impressive 363K by the end of December. Weekly active users also followed an upward trend, from over 2M to a peak of over 3M in the same period.
Intuit Inc.’s TurboTax: File Your Tax Return demonstrated consistent revenue generation, starting at 10K USD in late September and peaking at 16K USD by the end of December. Downloads and weekly active users peaked significantly in the last week of December at 170K and 909K, respectively.
MyBlock, from HRB Tax Group, Inc., did not generate revenue but experienced a notable jump in downloads from 4K to 56K by the year's end. Weekly active users saw a modest rise from around 48K to just under 100K in the same timeframe.
Keeper - taxes made magical saw revenue peak at 899 USD in early October, with a slight increase to 78 USD by the end of December. Downloads for the app had a steady increase from 1K to over 9K, while weekly active users more than tripled, climbing from around 1.5K to over 11K.
Lastly, TaxCaster: Tax Calculator, also by Intuit Inc., did not report any revenue but its downloads spiked in December, reaching 9K from a modest 452 in late September. The app's weekly active users similarly rose, from 8.6K to over 13K by the quarter's end.
