The fourth quarter of 2021 showcased interesting trends for the top 5 social apps in South Africa, according to data from Sensor Tower. Here's a breakdown of their performance:
TikTok experienced significant growth in weekly revenue, starting at approximately $52K at the beginning of October and peaking at $285K in early December. Weekly downloads fluctuated, reaching a high of 233K in the first week of October and a low of 125K in mid-November. Active users saw a steady increase, starting at around 3.8M and ending the quarter at nearly 3.9M.
For Bigo Live - Live Streaming App, weekly revenue showed some volatility, with earnings ranging from about $5K to nearly $29K by the end of November. Downloads remained relatively low but stable, averaging around 2K to 3K weekly. Active users hovered around 27K, showing minor fluctuations throughout the quarter.
Facebook maintained a consistent presence with weekly downloads ranging from 82K to 114K. Revenue saw a slight dip and recovery, peaking at nearly $10K in mid-December. The app dominated in active users, starting at over 15.3M and remaining relatively stable, ending the quarter with around 15.1M active users.
Grindr - Gay Dating & Chat showed steady weekly revenue, ranging from about $4.4K to $6.9K. Weekly downloads were consistent, averaging around 1K. Active users remained stable, starting at around 62K and ending the quarter at approximately 59K.
Likee - Short Video Community had a steady revenue stream, ranging from $1.5K to $2.3K weekly. Downloads showed a gradual increase, peaking at over 20K in the last week of December. Active users remained consistent, starting at around 554K and ending the quarter at approximately 543K.
