In the third quarter of 2022, the top five social networking applications in Kenya displayed diverse trends in downloads, revenue, and active users. The data, sourced from Sensor Tower, provides a comprehensive overview of the market dynamics.
WhatsApp Messenger, developed by WhatsApp Inc., maintained a robust presence with weekly downloads ranging from 72K to 155K. The highest download week occurred in late August, peaking at around 155K. Weekly revenue for the app remained relatively stable, hovering between $2 and $4. Active users saw a slight decline from approximately 11.6M in early July to 11.4M by the end of September.
Telegram Messenger by Telegram FZ-LLC experienced an upward trend in both downloads and revenue. Downloads fluctuated between 32K and 43K, with a notable peak at 43K in the final week of September. Revenue showed significant growth, reaching $100 in the last week of the quarter. Active users, however, saw a gradual decline from 2.2M to 1.9M over the period.
Facebook, from Meta Platforms, Inc., demonstrated strong download numbers, particularly in late August, where it surged to approximately 300K. Weekly revenue varied, peaking at $210 in early September. The app’s active users remained relatively stable, fluctuating around 11M, with a slight increase to 11.3M towards the end of the quarter.
Messenger, also by Meta Platforms, Inc., saw weekly downloads ranging from 33K to 52K, with a peak in late August. Revenue remained modest, generally between $2 and $13. The number of active users stayed around 3.6M, with minor fluctuations throughout the quarter.
imo-International Calls & Chat by imo.im showed consistent performance across all metrics. Weekly downloads hovered between 35K and 43K, while revenue peaked at $828 in late August. Active users increased steadily from 504K at the beginning of July to 570K by the end of September.
