In the first quarter of 2023, the carpooling and ridesharing market in Africa saw significant activity among the top five apps. Here’s a closer look at their performance based on data from Sensor Tower.
Bolt: Request a Ride experienced a steady download rate, starting at around 160K weekly downloads at the end of December and slightly declining to approximately 145K by the end of March. Weekly active users fluctuated but remained strong, peaking at 2.3M in mid-March before settling around 2.2M towards the end of the quarter.
inDrive. Save on city rides showed consistent download numbers, with notable peaks in the first half of the quarter. Downloads reached as high as 145K in early January but tapered off to just over 100K by the end of March. Active users for the app saw a slight increase, peaking at around 1.3M in mid-March before decreasing to 1.2M by the end of the quarter.
Yango: taxi, food, delivery had a dynamic quarter with weekly downloads peaking at 164K in late January but then falling to approximately 48K by the end of March. Active users followed a similar trend, peaking at nearly 392K at the end of January and then dropping to around 305K by the end of March. Revenue from Yango was minimal, with occasional small earnings.
Uber - Request a ride maintained a steady presence in the market. Weekly downloads ranged from 84K to 118K, with a slight dip in early February. Active users fluctuated but remained robust, peaking at nearly 2.8M in late January and then decreasing to about 2.5M by the end of March.
Yassir showed a varied performance in Q1. Weekly downloads saw highs of nearly 98K in mid-March but dropped to around 52K by the end of the quarter. Active users increased through the quarter, reaching a peak of approximately 349K in mid-March before falling to around 292K by the end of March.
