The first quarter of 2023 witnessed interesting trends for the top five news apps in New Zealand, according to data from Sensor Tower. Here's a breakdown of their performance on a unified platform.
X saw notable fluctuations in its revenue, peaking at approximately $1.95K in the week of March 20. Weekly downloads exhibited a downward trend, starting at 4.4K at the end of December and dropping to about 3.8K by the end of March. Active users showed relative stability, hovering around 450K to 460K throughout the quarter.
Reddit had a more stable quarter. Revenue remained fairly consistent, with minor peaks like $336 in the first week of January. Downloads surged notably to over 8K in the week of January 23 but stabilized around the 3K mark towards the end of the quarter. Active users fluctuated between 160K and 180K, with a slight dip in mid-March.
NZ Herald News experienced a strong quarter in terms of revenue, consistently earning around $17K to $24K weekly, peaking at $24.2K in the final week of February. Downloads showed a decline from 1.2K in January to 441 by the end of March. Active users were stable, maintaining around 5.4K to 6.1K throughout the quarter.
Stuff.co.nz had a consistent performance in active users, varying between 33K and 41K. Downloads saw a peak of 1.6K in mid-February but generally trended downward to around 661 by the end of March.
1NEWS showed a peak in downloads at 2.1K in mid-February, but like others, saw a decline towards the end of the quarter, dropping to 576 by the last week of March.
