In the first quarter of 2023, the top five social networking applications in the United Kingdom showed varied performance in terms of weekly downloads, revenue, and active users. Data from Sensor Tower highlights the trends for WhatsApp Messenger, Telegram Messenger, Facebook, Messenger, and Discord - Talk, Play, Hang Out.
WhatsApp Messenger, developed by WhatsApp Inc., saw its weekly downloads fluctuate throughout the quarter. Downloads peaked at approximately 230K in the last week of December but settled around 130K-150K for most of Q1. The app's weekly active users remained relatively stable, hovering around 51.8M to 51.9M. Revenue was negligible except for a modest $6 in the final week of March.
Telegram Messenger, published by Telegram FZ-LLC, exhibited a steady increase in weekly revenue, reaching a peak of approximately $31K in the week of February 20. Weekly downloads ranged from about 94K to 124K, with a notable spike in mid-March. The app's weekly active users remained consistent around 2.4M to 2.5M throughout the quarter.
Facebook, from Meta Platforms, Inc., maintained a solid weekly revenue stream, averaging around $65K to $77K. Downloads saw a slight decline, varying between 83K to 108K. Active users remained stable, fluctuating minimally around 36.4M to 37.1M during the quarter.
Messenger, also from Meta Platforms, Inc., experienced a gradual decline in weekly revenue, starting at about $2.9K and ending at around $1.9K. Weekly downloads showed a decrease from 138K in late December to approximately 97K by the end of March. The active user count remained relatively steady, around 22.9M to 24.2M.
Discord - Talk, Play, Hang Out, by Discord, Inc., had a strong revenue performance, peaking at roughly $129K in the last week of February. Weekly downloads were more volatile, ranging from 50K to 68K. The app's active users showed a stable trend, with numbers around 4M to 4.2M.
