In the third quarter of 2023, the performance of the top five social networking apps in Russia showcased interesting trends across downloads, revenue, and active users. Here’s an overview of their performance based on data from Sensor Tower.
Telegram Messenger experienced significant revenue fluctuations, peaking at around $431K in late July and ending the quarter with a high of approximately $426K in the last week of September. Downloads showed a mixed trend, starting at 574K in late June and dipping to 370K in early September, before recovering to 477K by the end of the quarter. Weekly active users remained relatively stable, starting at 89.4M and climbing to 90.1M by the end of September.
Threads, an Instagram app, although not generating revenue, saw a notable decline in downloads. Starting strong with 715K in early July, downloads dropped sharply to 49K by the end of September. Active users also saw a decrease, beginning at 595K in early July and falling to 265K by the end of the quarter.
WhatsApp Messenger did not show revenue data but had a varied download trend. Downloads started at 313K in late June, peaked at 386K in mid-July, and then declined to around 250K by the end of September. Active users remained relatively steady, starting at 104M in late June and maintaining around the same level throughout the quarter.
VK: social network, messenger saw a consistent revenue stream, with weekly revenue fluctuating around $500K, peaking at $576K in late August. Downloads were stable, averaging around 220K to 250K weekly. Active users showed a slight increase, from 81.3M in late June to 81.4M by the end of September.
VK Messenger: Live chat, calls had minimal revenue, with the highest weekly revenue reaching just $92 in mid-September. Downloads surged dramatically, from 74K in late June to a peak of 503K in late August, before settling at 250K by the end of September. Active users consistently grew, starting at 2.9M in late June and rising to 3.4M by the end of the quarter.
