In the third quarter of 2024, the top five news and magazine applications in New Zealand displayed varied performance trends across downloads, revenue, and user engagement, according to data from Sensor Tower.
Stuff.co.nz saw a notable decline in weekly downloads, starting from 2.6K at the beginning of July and tapering off to around 625 by the end of September. Despite this, the app maintained a robust user base, with weekly active users fluctuating between 22K and 34K, showcasing a stable engagement level throughout the quarter.
The 1NEWS app experienced a similar downtrend in downloads, beginning the quarter with approximately 1.6K downloads and ending with a slight uptick to 859 by the last week of September. However, active user data was not available for this app during the period.
For BBC: World News & Stories, downloads started at 784 and saw a gradual decline, closing the quarter at around 398. The weekly active users remained relatively stable, ranging from 7.1K to 8K, indicating consistent user interest despite the drop in new downloads.
RNZ maintained a steady download performance, beginning with 878 downloads and ending with 662. Although active user numbers were not provided, the download consistency suggests a steady user acquisition rate.
Lastly, NZ Herald News showed a modest download volume, starting at 406 and slightly decreasing to 279 by the end of the quarter. However, it demonstrated a strong revenue stream, with weekly revenues fluctuating between $4.4K and $5.6K, peaking in late August.
