In the third quarter of 2024, the leading social networking applications in South Africa showed varied trends in downloads, active users, and revenue. This analysis, based on Sensor Tower data, highlights the performance of Threads, WhatsApp Messenger, Facebook, Telegram Messenger, and Messenger.
Threads saw a noticeable increase in weekly downloads, starting from approximately 38.3K in early July and peaking at 93.5K by the end of September. However, its weekly active users fluctuated, starting at around 571.6K and ending at 502.5K.
WhatsApp Messenger maintained high download numbers, with a peak of 522.6K in mid-August. The app consistently had a vast user base, with weekly active users rising steadily from about 20.9M to 21.4M over the quarter.
Facebook exhibited consistent weekly revenue, averaging around $9K, with a peak of $10.6K in late August. Downloads fluctuated modestly, peaking at 384.5K in early July. Active users showed a gradual increase from 29.1M to 31M throughout the quarter.
Telegram Messenger saw a steady increase in weekly revenue, reaching $5.3K by the end of September. Downloads were consistently strong, peaking at 88.2K in late September. Active users experienced some fluctuations, starting at 1.37M and ending at 1.24M.
Messenger had stable download numbers, with an increase towards the end of the quarter, reaching 77.1K. Active users remained robust, with a slight increase from 10.3M to 10.5M.
