These Are the App Store's Most Popular Publishers by No. 1 Apps

These publishers had the most apps and games that made it to the top of App Store's charts for iPhone, according to Sensor Tower App Intelligence data.

We began the week with a look at how many apps had reached the coveted No. 1 spot on the App Store charts. Now, we're approaching the topic from another angle: Which publishers have realized this goal the most since the earliest days of Apple's platform.

According to Sensor Tower App Intelligence data, just 2 percent of all app publishers on iOS have had an app hit No. 1 on the store's free, paid, or top grossing iPhone charts in any country since 2010. The following are the ones who've had the largest number of apps achieve every developer's dream.

Most No. 1 Free Apps

The first thing you'll notice about the publishers who've had the most apps hit No. 1 on the iPhone free apps chart is that they all publish games. That's certainly true about Tencent, which tops the chart below with 121 apps. In fact, its app that reached No. 1 on the most top free iPhone charts is a game, specifically PUBG Mobile. Even Naver (74 apps), which owns chat heavyweight LINE, owes its ranking on this list to the fact that it also publishes (very popular) games.

The fact that games publishers dominate this list is hardly surprising, as there is typically far more marketing might applied to game launches, and more volatility surrounding games reaching the No. 1 ranking in general.

Looking at the bases of operations for these publishers, we see the United States and South Korea tied at three each, followed by France with two, then Japan and China with one each.

Most No. 1 Paid Apps

Games publishers also command the ranking of those with the most No. 1 paid apps, although No. 6 ranked IAC Mobile (28 apps), which owns Tinder and a multitude of other non-game apps, actually counts a paid document scanning app as its most prolific chart-topper.

While it ranked No. 3 among publishers of free apps, Electronic Arts took the top spot on this chart when it came to paid apps with 72. Of course, most of these were from the earlier days of the App Store when paid games reigned and EA was one of the most prolific publishers (the topic of our next App Store at 10 analysis).

Other standouts on this list include No. 3 Square Enix (44 apps), known for its premium console game ports commonly carrying price tags of $15 or more, and cult favorite Kairosoft (23 apps) at No. 10, which made a name for itself early on with paid simulation games such as the classic Game Dev Story. Then there's Sweden-based Toca Boca (25 apps) at No. 8, which creates popular paid children's apps such as Toca Kitchen 2.

Most No. 1 Top Grossing Apps

Of publishers that had the most apps reach No. 1 on the top grossing iPhone charts, France-based Gameloft, with 89, took the crown. Electronic Arts was at No. 2 with 78 apps, while fellow U.S.-based publisher Glu Games owns 66 that have been No. 1 top grossing in at least one App Store region.

Rounding out the top five publishers on this ranking are two giants from Asia, GAMEVIL (48 apps), based in South Korea, and Tencent (40 apps), which releases what seems like a never ending stream of No. 1 top grossing hits on its home region's App Store in China, including the revenue generating phenomenon that is Honor of Kings (Arena of Valor in the West).
