We’ve acquired Video Game Insights (VGI)!
Mobile gaming company Mytona has been incredibly successful in pioneering puzzle games — but increased competition in the genre forced them to reevaluate their strategies in order to maintain a competitive edge. Wanting to maximize user acquisition and engagement for their stalwart title, Seekers Notes, the team decided to utilize in-game events and other live operations to engage players. However they lacked the context necessary to ensure success, and so Mytona turned to the full suite of Sensor Tower products to gain a holistic view of market strategies, and answer key questions surrounding best timing and cadence for deploying new mechanics.
Mytona used App Performance Insights to track daily movements of top paid and free apps, helping the team spot sudden changes—like new live-ops events—and understand how successful games grow over time. They were also able to monitor trending apps, track update timelines, and analyze user reviews to see how players reacted to specific changes.
The team identified patterns in top-performing games and uncovered areas where Seekers Notes could improve. Using Sensor Tower’s App Performance Insights and App Advertising Insights, they analyzed competitor keyword strategies and creative trends to build a new, data-informed user acquisition plan. They also tracked metrics like active sessions, repeat visits, and drop-offs to see how players were engaging with the game compared to competitors. One key improvement was redesigning an in-game offer to be more user-friendly, with clearer pricing and benefits. This change alone led to an 80% increase in revenue.
Thanks to Mytona’s agile mindset and data-centric decision making, Seekers Notes reached a momentous milestone of $100 million in total cumulative net revenue in early 2019. More importantly, the company has been able to sustain Seekers Notes’ relevance as even more challengers appear—a sign that the publisher’s persistence has paid off. Sensor Tower’s full suite offered Mytona the opportunity to develop a multifaceted approach to its mobile strategy roadmap. Now armed with a comprehensive understanding of the competitive landscape for gaming apps, the Mytona team has not only advanced Seekers Notes, but also identified areas where its portfolio can expand. The company can now confidently explore new genres and playstyles, keeping an eye out for sustainability and retention of valued users.
“As the developers say, success lies in the constant improvement of the game and the implementation of new mechanics.”
