A record 18 dating apps generated at least $1 million in user spending in the United States during Q1 2019 across the App Store and Google Play, up from just nine apps in Q1 2016. App revenue and download estimates are from Sensor Tower’s Store Intelligence platform.
Nine apps exceeded $5 million in gross user spending during the quarter, including IAC Mobile’s Tinder, Match, OkCupid, and Plenty of Fish. Tinder earned more than $120 million in the U.S. during Q1 2019, while Bumble was a distant second with $37 million.
IAC Mobile controlled more than 40 percent of the U.S. dating app download market in Q1. The company acquired Hinge in June 2018, which was the No. 6 app in Q1 2019 by U.S. downloads. Hinge had 850,000 installs during the quarter, which was a 2.8x growth from 300,000 in Q2 2018. Bumble passed Plenty of Fish Dating to become the second largest dating app by U.S. downloads in Q1 2019. It had nearly 1.7 million first-time installs during the quarter.
IAC Mobile’s share of the U.S. dating market fell to 43 percent in Q2 2018, its lowest quarter since 2016. With its acquisition of Hinge, this boosted its share back up to 44 percent in Q1 2019. Among the top 25 U.S. dating apps, Tinder has maintained approximately 20 percent of downloads since 2016. Bumble accounted for 10 percent of downloads in Q1 2019.
