India’s Food Apps Deliver

Indian food delivery apps saw explosive growth in downloads and usage in the wake of the pandemic. Growth has since decelerated, but appears to be rebounding in recent months. Sensor Tower data shows that Zomato and Swiggy are the largest players in the market (by MAUs) but are ceding share to up and comers, who, in many cases, have ramped mobile network advertising to drive share gains.

India’s Food Apps Deliver

Key Takeaways:

  • ST’s cohort of Indian food delivery mobile apps saw YTD 2024 MAU growth up 22% YoY, on top of 23% and 42% YoY growth in 2023 and 2022, respectively

    • And while download growth faltered in 2023, the tide is turning, rising 38% in 2Q24 led by outsized growth from Zepto and EatSure

    • 80% of downloads for the cohort in 2Q24 are organic, with Swiggy and Zomato reaching 90% and 89%, respectively, as of QTD 3Q24

  • Advertising has been a huge driver of downloads and usage, with Zepto in particular working to increase its share of voice through YTD 2024, which has likely been driving download growth

    • In YTD 2024, Zepto focused its mobile advertising to the networks of Chartboost, Digital Turbine, InMobi and AdMob where it had an average SOV of 14.75%, 12.82%, 10.12% and 5.21%, respectively

  • Within the cohort, Zomato remains the largest mobile app by MAUs, with 37% share in YTD 2024, though this is down from 53% in 2021

    • However, both Zomato and Swiggy, the second largest player with 27% share, have seen share decreases due to gains by Blinkit and Zepto, who now make up 16% and 13% share, respectively
