Netmarble Games Corp.’s Solo Leveling:Arise, launched in early May 2024, has surpassed $100 million in gross revenue in just three months, according to Sensor Tower estimates. Solo Leveling: Arise is based off of the popular web novel turned Korean webtoon turned anime which aired earlier this year. The success of the mobile game alongside the popularity of the anime showcases the power of this IP to move its fans from one medium to another, attracting new fans along the way, and allowing them to interact with the IP in the medium that is most engaging to them. The story of the IP includes a game-like setting in which the main character levels up, goes on quests, and collects equipment and allies, which no doubt contributed to the success of the mobile game Solo Leveling: Arise.

In May 2024, the month it launched, Solo Leveling: Arise was the #1 hack and slash game, #2 action game, and #14 mobile game by worldwide revenue in the App Store and Google Play. To give some perspective, mobile games that earned less in May 2024 include PUBG Mobile, Genshin Impact, and Clash of Clans. While revenue has fallen off since its launch, Solo Leveling: Arise has nonetheless managed to cross the $100 million mark in just a few short months.

Solo Leveling: Arise’s success is particularly notable in South Korea, where players have contributed the most significant share of spending. This is not a huge surprise, given that the IP is from South Korea, the story itself takes place in South Korea, and South Korea is the fourth largest mobile game market by revenue. South Korean players account for 33 percent of total revenue, while the second highest grossing region, the US, brought in 19% of sales. Asia has been a major contributor to the game's download numbers, with countries like India and Indonesia leading the way. The US, Brazil, and South Korea were #3, #4, and #5 respectively in downloads.

While Solo Leveling: Arise outstripped Supercell’s Squad Busters in initial revenue performance, Tencent’s Dungeon Fighter Mobile remains the top launch of 2024 with over $500 million in consumer spend since its launch in late May 2024. Other top earning 2024 launches to watch include Joy Net Games’ breakout idle RPG Legend of Mushroom, miHoYo’s new hack and slash Zenless Zone Zero, and Love and Deepspace, an otome (romantic visual novel) game.
