Dating app Tinder was the world's highest grossing mobile app for the second consecutive quarter, surpassing Netflix and three other SVOD apps—YouTube, Tencent Video, and iQIYI—in the top five.
Facebook again topped the download charts with four of the five most installed apps. TikTok, which had ranked No. 3 overall in the first quarter, dropped one position to No. 4 in Q2 as the Facebook app returned to the top three.
PUBG Mobile from Tencent shot up the games revenue chart last quarter due to its rebranding as Game for Peace in China, which brought with it changes enabling the battle royale title to monetize there for the first time. Tencent also saw success with Perfect World, a roleplaying title for the Chinese market which launched during Q2 and ranked No. 7 for overall games revenue.
Hyper-casual titles continued to dominate mobile games downloads last quarter, comprising seven of the top 10 most installed titles. Stack Ball from Azur Interactive led the pack, topping both the overall and Google Play rankings.
Due to the continued success of its chart-topping game Honor of Kings and popular SVOD app Tencent Video, Tencent continued at the highest earning mobile publisher for the quarter, leading eight other games publishers in the overall top 10. IAC Mobile, owner of Tinder, was the only non-games publisher to make the ranking.
Facebook ranked No. 1 among all publishers in terms of downloads yet again, ahead of Google at No. 2. Along with ByteDance at No. 7, they were the only non-games publishers in the downloads top 10.
