Top Apps Worldwide for Q2 2019 by Downloads

This week, we’ll be sharing selected excerpts from our Q2 2019 Data Digest report, beginning with the most downloaded mobile apps worldwide for the quarter. The app with the most new downloads during Q2 was WhatsApp, with more than 191 million first-time installs. The full ranking of the top 10 most downloaded publishers is below. App download estimates are from Sensor Tower’s Store Intelligence platform.

Worldwide Top Apps by Overall Downloads

The second best performing app worldwide in Q2 2019 by downloads was Messenger with more than 181 million installs. The next highest performing app was Facebook, followed by TikTok and Instagram.

The same five apps have been at the top of this ranking since Q1 2018, including four Facebook-owned apps and TikTok. Facebook’s core app surpassed TikTok in Q2 2019 to regain the No. 3 spot. Boosted by 63 percent quarter-over-quarter growth, Snapchat achieved its best ranking of any quarter since Q2 2017 at No. 6. Snapchat has not been in the top five since Q1 2017.

Worldwide Top Apps by App Store Downloads

YouTube was the most downloaded app on the App Store worldwide for Q2 2019 with more than 28.5 million installs, followed by TikTok, Instagram, Snapchat, and Facebook.

TikTok’s reign as the most downloaded app on the App Store ended at five consecutive quarters, as YouTube took the top spot in Q2 2019 with 28.5 million installs. Top growing apps on the App Store included Snapchat and PinDuoDuo. PinDuoDuo was No. 9 worldwide after being outside the top 30 last quarter and was the No. 1 app in China.

Worldwide Top Apps by Google Play Downloads

WhatsApp was the most downloaded app on Google Play worldwide for Q2 2019 with more than 168.4 million installs, followed by Messenger, TikTok, Facebook, and Instagram.

Facebook passed TikTok to join WhatsApp and Messenger among the top three apps. TikTok was well ahead of the No. 5 app, Instagram, with nearly 65 percent more installs in the quarter. India drove much of the success of top apps on Google Play. Popular apps in India among the top 10 included SHAREit, Likee (formerly LIKE Video), and Hotstar.
