See the top countries worldwide in Q1 2019 by downloads, according to Sensor Tower data.

The top country in terms of app downloads in Q1 2019 was India with more than 4.5 billion new installs. The full ranking of the top 10 countries with the most new installs is below. App download estimates are from Sensor Tower’s Store Intelligence platform.

Top Countries by Overall Downloads

The United States was the second-ranked country in terms of worldwide downloads in Q1 2019 with more than three billion new installs. The next highest performing country was Brazil, followed by Russia, and Indonesia.

The U.S. surpassed three billion downloads in Q1 2019, which represented 1 percent growth year-over-year. Fifty-six percent of the country’s downloads were from the App Store, with the other 44 percent from Google Play. The only change among the top 10 countries from the previous quarter was Russia passing Indonesia to take the No. 4 spot. Nearly 20 percent of Russia’s installs were from the App Store.

As Google Play is not available in China, we have excluded the country from the above chart.

China had the most new installs on the App Store worldwide for Q1 2019 with more than two billion installs, followed by the U.S., Japan, Great Britain, and Russia.

The year-over-year decrease in App Store installs can be attributed primarily to China. China’s downloads fell 21.5 percent year-over-year, while downloads outside of China grew 3.6 percent. U.S. App Store downloads reached 1.69 billion in Q1 2019, an all-time high. Japan’s downloads also bounced back after a low first quarter in 2018 to 413 million.

Top Countries by Google Play Downloads

India had the most new installs on Google Play worldwide for Q1 2019 with more than 4.7 billion installs, followed by Brazil, the U.S., Indonesia, and Russia.

India’s downloads grew 29.4 percent year-over-year to 4.72 billion. However, this total was down 2 percent compared to Q4 2018, the first time India’s downloads have declined quarter-over-quarter since 2014. Google Play downloads dropped 3.8 percent year-over-year in the U.S. The country’s total of 1.34 billion installs in Q1 2019 was down from a peak of 1.48 billion back in Q1 2015.
