The top mobile game by worldwide revenue for March 2020 was PUBG Mobile from Tencent with more than $232 million in user spending, which was more than three times what the title generated in March 2019. Approximately 61 percent of PUBG Mobile’s revenue was from China, followed by 11 percent from the United States and 3.6 percent from Japan. The full ranking of the top grossing mobile games for March 2020 is above. App revenue estimates are from Sensor Tower’s Store Intelligence platform.

Honor of Kings from Tencent was the second highest earning mobile game worldwide for March 2020 with more than $112 million in gross revenue. About 93 percent of Honor of King’s revenue was from China, followed by 3 percent from Thailand, where it’s operated by Garena and known as Garena Realm of Valor. The next top grossing app was Monster Strike from Mixi, followed by AFK Arena from Lilith Games and Candy Crush Saga from King.

March proved to be PUBG Mobile’s best month ever for user spending, up 21.8 percent from February 2020, its second best month. The boost in revenue coincided with the game’s second anniversary, offering Royale Pass levelling rewards, while the COVID-19 pandemic could also be a contributor to rising user spending for the past two months as people around the world are forced to stay at home.

Other titles performing well in March were Roblox, which generated close to $70 million. The 28 percent month-over-month rise in revenue coincided with the seventh annual Bloxy Awards. Pokémon GO from Niantic, meanwhile, had its best month of the year so far, despite regional lockdowns across the globe keeping people inside. A combination of altering gameplay to make it easier to play indoors, and a special ticketed event, helped spur on user spending despite the challenges the pandemic brings to the location-based game. It’s evidence that apps that adapt to changing market conditions, and those that run popular events are well positioned to keep revenue stable and even grow it.
