Black Friday delivered another substantial boost to shopping app downloads in the United States, Sensor Tower Store Intelligence data shows. The overall number of first-time app downloads in the U.S. App Store’s dedicated Shopping category on Black Friday 2019 increased 8 percent year-over-year, totaling more than 1.8 million installs overall.
The top 10 most downloaded shopping apps on November 29 grew 11 percent Y/Y, reaching a combined 527,000 installs. That represented 28.8 percent of all downloads for the Shopping category—the largest share yet for its top apps on Black Friday since the category was established in 2015.
Walmart beat out Amazon as Black Friday’s most downloaded shopping app on the U.S. App Store, with its 113,000 downloads representing an impressive Y/Y increase of 23 percent.
This is the first Black Friday on which Amazon has not topped U.S. iOS shopping app downloads, with this year’s 102,000 first-time installs reflecting a 10 percent decrease since last year. It’s worth noting that Amazon still ranked No. 1 when analyzing the App Store globally; given the app’s ubiquity, there is an increasing scarcity of iOS users left in the U.S. who can download it for the first time.
Meanwhile, new additions to the top 10 most downloaded apps on Black Friday included Nike, Adidas, and luxury streetwear marketplace GOAT—signifying a consumer shift away from generalized shopping apps such as Target or Wish towards apps focused on apparel and specific brands.
