Trainline Steams Ahead with Solid Active User Growth in 2024

Sensor Tower data shows that train booking platform, Trainline, has exhibited positive, double-digit YoY growth in MAUs as consumers have increasingly shifted their spending to experiences and travel and as the company has expanded its geographic presence.

Trainline Steams Ahead with Solid Active User Growth in 2024

Key Takeaways:

  • The reversal of lock down restrictions in the post-pandemic period has propelled growth for train ticket booking platform Trainline. Per ST data, Trainline app MAUs in the company’s fiscal 1H23 (Mar’22-Aug’22), FY2023 (Mar’22-Feb’23), 1H24 (Mar’23-Aug’23) and FY2024 (Mar’23-Feb’24) increased an average of 37% YoY, which was directionally in line with the company’s reported net ticket sales (+58% YoY) in the same period

    • Per ST data, Trainline saw the strongest YoY MAU growth in its FY2024 from Spain (+56%), the US (+43%), Switzerland (+28%), Belgium (+28%) and Italy (+24%). Through 1H25 HTD, Trainline has seen the strongest YoY MAU growth in Australia (+44%), Canada (+31%), the US (+18%) and Italy (+12%)

  • Per ST data, the UK is Trainline’s largest market by mobile app MAUs at 58% through 1H25 HTD, though this is down slightly from 63% in 1H22, which shows that the company is beginning to grow its footprint in other countries

    • Italy (+2ppts), Spain (+2ppts) and the US (+1ppts) are key markets where Trainline has exhibited an increase in MAU share in 1H25 HTD compared to 1H22. This bodes well for the company’s diversification efforts beyond the UK, as it is currently heavily exposed to the market on mobile
