Uber Speeds Past Expectations, Can Lyft Keep Up?
Uber's Q3 2022 monthly active users (MAUs) on its app increased by 14% YoY, driven by the lifting of travel restrictions and a shift in consumer spending from retail to services, according to Sensor Tower estimates. The growth was also supported by an increase in new and returning drivers, with MAUs on the Uber Driver app up 16% YoY. In contrast, ride-share competitor Lyft saw slower mobile app growth in Q3, with MAUs up 1% YoY as of October 2022.
Key Takeaways:
Per Sensor Tower estimates 3Q22 MAUs on the Uber app were up 14% YoY (1% QoQ) vs Uber’s reported Monthly Active Platform Consumers (MAPCs) up 14% YoY (2% QoQ), driven by the lifting of travel restrictions propelling demand and the continued shift of consumer spending from retail to services
Uber has benefited from growth in both new and returning drivers: ST MAU estimates on the Uber Driver app were up 16% YoY in 3Q22 and 38% against 3Q20, when demand stalled due to the pandemic
Uber has largely been able to carry the momentum generated in the summer into the fall season with MAUs on the Uber and Uber Driver app up 6% and 11% YoY, respectively in Oct’ 22, according to Sensor Tower estimates
Ride-share competitor Lyft saw slower mobile app growth in 3Q per ST estimates: MAUs on the Lyft app are up 1% YoY as of Oct’ 22 and were up 3% YoY in 3Q22, perhaps softened by Lyft’s lack of exposure to international, high-growth markets relative to Uber (86% of Lyft MAUs from USA, vs only 23% for Uber)
