Three and a half years after its launch, Angry Birds 2 had its best year yet in 2018, grossing more than $116 million globally according to Sensor Tower Store Intelligence estimates. That was 47 percent more than players spent in the game during 2017, and the title's significant growth played a key role in developer Rovio posting its best year for mobile revenue since at least 2012.
Rovio generated 53 percent of the $220 million in mobile revenue it grossed from in-app purchases during 2018 from Angry Birds 2, up from 39 percent the previous year. That $220 million total was 8 percent more than the $204 million the publisher grossed in 2017.
Angry Birds 2 has been one of mobile gaming's biggest success stories since launching as the free-to-play sequel to the premium Angry Birds in July 2015. Rovio's continuous tuning and tweaking of its in-game economy has led to its player spending during the past 12 months growing to nearly four times its first-year revenue.
Most of last year's spending in the game—55 percent—came from the United States, which contributed approximately $63.8 million to its total revenue. Its second largest market by revenue was Germany at close to 5 percent of spending, or nearly $6 million.
Sensor Tower data shows Angry Birds 2 ranked No. 84 for overall mobile game revenue worldwide in 2018, up from No. 110 the previous year.
