Earlier this year, Google added new categories to the Google Play app store. This presented an opportunity for app publishers to rank well in the new, less competitive categories. In fact, we saw several apps get ranked in the top 10, with only a few thousand downloads.
With the launch of iOS 8, a similar opportunity exists on the Apple App Store. But there are a lot of questions as to what the new categories and subcategories are. This post will give you a complete list of all of the current subcategories, as well as some observations on the category expansion.
As we were compiling this list, we noticed that the new subcategories are not as organized as they could be. In some cases, they are completely incorrect.
For example, take a look at Health & Fitness > Yoga. Zumba is in that category when it clearly doesn't belong.
There are also some strange formatting errors. The Korean language is capitalized for some reason under Travel > Language & Translation.
What are some other errors that you see?
Some subcategories don't have any errors, but they are missing some categorizations. Therefore, we can guess that there will be updates to the subcategories soon. It will be interesting to see how often Apple makes these updates and how they affect ASO.
We will get into more of the specifics of how to rank for these expanded subcategories in future blog posts. Until then, take a look at this list and figure out if you can target a less competitive subcategory.
