The final excerpt from our State of Shopping Apps Report for 2019 focuses on the top Department Store apps in the United States by downloads across the App Store and Google Play. App download estimates in this report are from Sensor Tower’s Store Intelligence platform.
Walmart was the most downloaded Department Store app in the U.S. between Q1 and Q3 2019, followed by Target, Macy’s, Kohl’s, and JCPenny.
Walmart was the top Department Store app in the U.S. each quarter except Q4 2017, when Target took the top spot. This huge quarter was primarily explained by Target discontinuing its coupon app Cartwheel and transitioning users to the Target app. Department Store apps across the board were boosted by holiday shopping to their highest quarters in Q4 each year. Walmart and Target had strong third quarters in 2019 leading into Q4, so these apps will look to surpass their totals from Q4 2018 this quarter.
Walmart continued to dominate the Department Store app space in the U.S. with more than half of the downloads between Q1-Q3 2019 (among the top 100 Shopping apps). Target was No. 2 with 24 percent of installs, and the other three apps combined for the remaining quarter. Macy’s passed Kohl’s and JCPenney in Q1 2019 to become the No. 3 Department Store app in the U.S. Its 2.6 million downloads in the first three quarters of 2019 was already higher than its total in all of 2018.
