Top E-Commerce Apps See Average MAU Up 35% from Pre-Pandemic Levels Ahead of Black Friday 2021

Season Tower and Adjust have partnered together on the E-Commerce App Report 2021 outlining key trends ahead of the holiday season.

Takeaways from Sensor Tower and Adjust's E-commerce report 2021

Mobile is the new leader of e-commerce, and as the holiday shopping season has commenced globally, mobile e-commerce (m-commerce) companies can expect to see a steady rise in app installs and usage resulting in sales. According to eMarketer, 67.3 percent of total e-commerce sales are expected to come from mobile this year, with global e-commerce sales expected to rise 14.3 percent from 2020.

To resolve the current and near-term state of the space into focus, Sensor Tower and Adjust have partnered on the new E-Commerce App Report 2021, available now. This in-depth overview covers the top mobile shopping apps from 2019 to 2021 and outlines key trends that advertisers and marketers can leverage in the coming months. Read on for a preview of just some of the insights contained in the full report.

Shopping Apps See Average Users Increase Steadily in 2021

As shopping app installs increased by 10 percent this year compared to 2020, Sensor Tower and Adjust saw their average monthly, weekly, and daily active users increase steadily in 2021 so far. Average monthly active users for the top 150 e-commerce apps globally were approximately 14 million in Q1 2019 compared to more than 18 million in Q3 2021, an increase of 35 percent.

India, Indonesia, and Mexico Outperformed 2020 Adoption Gains

According to our findings, India ranked as one of the top six markets worldwide for e-commerce and m-commerce apps from 2019 to 3Q21. So far in 2021, India's download growth for the category jumped from approximately 317 million in the first three quarters of 2020 to 470 million during the same period this year, a 49 percent increase. Amazon and Flipkart are among the top 10 e-commerce apps from 2019 through 3Q21, both with India as their key market.

India Outperforms Their 2020 Numbers

Indonesia and Mexico have also outperformed their 2020 adoption levels for the category in 2021. Shopping app downloads in the United States, on the other hand, slowed from 258 million in the first three quarters of 2020 to 218 million during Q1 to Q3 of this year, a decrease of 16 percent. As Black Friday deals begin to mount over the coming days, e-commerce apps will naturally see an uptick in U.S. installs and usage.

The Sensor Tower Store Intelligence and Usage Intelligence platforms unlock even deeper analysis potential around m-commerce, including key insights on app adoption trends, monthly active users for selected geographies, and more. Adjust Measure helps to better understand what motivates end users at every point in their journey, with insights across the customer lifecycle.
